Cadiz, of all its legacies, there is one which needs to be emphasised, it is the art of alamdrabas, the art of fishing with more than 3000 years of tradition.

Barbate, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes, Tarifa, are four localities where the almadrabas fishing is being used going every year in Spring to the hunt of th great red, the red thuna which is swimming towards the Mediterranean.

This is an art of selected fishing, which captures adult individuals, and they are fished by hand, which is the most traditional way. In the past, there was a great interaction between the fishermen and the orcas, who pass by these waters in August, to feed on the thuna. And there exist many stories on the pursuit of both to catch a thuna...

Unfortunately, because of the gigantic professional fishing boats, less and less thuna is found which put many local fisherm on the unemployment list and leaves the orcas to seach for other places where to find food..
